The 2nd trimester of pregnancy is sometimes referred to as the honeymoon stage of the pregnancy. This is because the stage is characterized by a reduction in the nausea problem of the first trimester. There are however many changes that happen during this pregnancy period.
One change is that of breast enlargement which is mostly due to enlargement of milk gland in the breasts that is triggered by increased estrogen and progesterone hormones. The enlargement may also be due to more fat deposits in the breast tissues. With the growth of the fetus inside the uterus, the abdomen will enlarge and this can be rapid and also accompanied by weight gain. Dizziness will also be experienced due to hormone triggered blood vessel expansion leading to low blood pressure. During the 2nd trimester, there may be some mucus discharge from the vagina. This is normal and meant to prevent infections. However, a foul smelling discharge and one that causes irritation may indicate infection and seeking medical help is advised. The need for the lungs to take in more oxygen for the woman and the baby may also lead to short breath. Snoring at night may also be experienced or enhanced during the second trimester of pregnancy. Cramps in the legs may also be experienced and thus it is advisable one remains physically active. Massage may also be of help in the case of cramps.
The physical changes that occur during the second trimester such as the enlarged abdomen and others, plus the hormonal changes that are happening within the body, may affect the emotions of the pregnant woman. It is important to discuss the issues with ones partner so they can understand and provide support. Seeking medical help in case of any problems or concerns is also important in addition to the regular ante-natal checks.
